Explore my blog for insights into my colorectal cancer journey. I aim to contribute to a wider dialogue about this type of cancer. If I can educate or possibly spare just one person from facing a similar experience, I'll consider my purpose for creating this blog fulfilled.
The risk of colorectal cancer increases with age. Most cases affect people over 50 years old but I have now read of many cases with younger people. Common symptoms include diarrhoea, constipation, blood in the stool, abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, and low iron levels. Many people will not have symptoms in the early stages of the disease. I personally only had constipation, blood in the stool and fatigue.
The gold standard for colon/rectal cancer screening is the colonoscopy. It's a highly effective test capable of not only preventing colon and rectal cancer but also diagnosing the condition. If a polyp is detected during the procedure, it can be promptly identified, removed and thus serve as a preventive measure again the development of the disease.
Up to now (Nov 16, 2023) , I've primarily been in research mode, trying to share all the insights I've gathered about my condition. As chemotherapy commences, my intention is to provide regular updates on how I am navigating and feeling through the process.
